Book Review: 12 Ways Your Phone Is Changing You

If there is a book that we need in 2017, it is 12 Ways Your Phone Is Changing You by Tony Reinke. For better or worse, we must recognize that smartphones are now a common device in our world. We can try and fight it all we want, but most of humanity in western culture now carries one of these on a daily basis. What it comes down to in the end is that we will either learn to control our smartphones or they will control us.

12ways

Throughout the new work by Reinke, he outlines twelve ways that your phone is changing you (great title, right?). While it is easy to chuckle at the title matching the breakdown of the content directly, we cannot ignore the truth contained in the pages. We know that our phones have changed our life, but it is astounding to see these characteristics outlined in detail.

The things that Reinke outlines are all negative and are not what you would typically expect to hear. He does not list just a simple thing such as how we suffer from the addiction, but lists negative impacts in deeper veins. He talks about how loss of literacy, how we lose meaning, and how we lose our place in time. All of these go deeper than just battling an addiction to a handheld device.

If you are looking for a book that will forever shape your smartphone usage, this is it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. We need to understand how to appropriately wield the weapon in our hands. It can be used to slay or slay us.
