Called To Help – Red Nose Day

As we near the start of summer and think about vacations and time off with families there are others who are not nearly as fortunate to enjoy those luxuries. On May 25th NBC television will air Red Nose Day, a live telecast aimed at ending child poverty.

Red Nose Day is unique in that multiple charitable organizations will benefit from the three hour live program that night. The event is all about coming together, to have fun, and make a difference for kids in need.  The goal is to end child poverty, here in the U.S. and around the world — one nose at a time.

The fundraiser began in 1988 by U.K. director, Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral) and recently started in the U.S. Red Nose Day raised over $36 million in 2016, and over $23 million the previous year, totaling over $60 million in its first two years in the US.

The two charities among many others that will benefit from Red Nose Day are Covenant House and charity: water.  These are just one of many organizations that everyday work tirelessly to make a difference here at home in the U.S. and around the world. What’s staggering with the statistics is that this is happening right here in the U.S.

We’ve learned from Red Nose Day charities that:

  • 1 out of 5 young people live in poverty.
  • Every Year, More Than 2 Million Kids in America Will Face a Period of Homelessness.
  • 57% of homeless kids spend at least one day every month without food.

It’s heartbreaking with regards to the homeless kids and youth as it puts them in such danger of human traffickers – something I know so many of our churches and organizations fight against.  We have an opportunity to make a difference and keep some of these kids away from the streets.

We hope you will consider taking the time to help those in need and checking out both ministries and finding a way however big or small to support them. We’re called to help those in need and we often forget that although we are fortunate to live in a country that provides us with a lot – there are many children right in front of us who struggle to even get a meal a day. We hope you’ll think about ways you can help our youth and even join in on the fun and put on a Red Nose and post to your social channels with the hashtag: #rednoseday

Red Noses are available at all Walgreen locations.  For those wanting to do something fun and get involved, stop by Walgreens and buy a red nose.

We do believe that if we can all raise awareness about this issue – we can all end child poverty one nose at a time!

Freak Out!

I want to state up front that I am not one that struggles with anxiety. At times, my life can be overwhelming and I end up feeling overwhelmed, but I have not battled long seasons of anxiety or depression. It seems as if these feelings eventually fade in my life. What means is that I cannot understand what individuals who are afflicted by this go through. What it does not mean is though is that I should try not to gain insight into this condition that impacts millions of people.

_240_360_Book.1876.coverThe probability of you knowing someone who suffers from anxiety is staggering. It is something that impacts people from all walks of life and sometimes remains invisible until something finally breaks. We may walk by and talk to people who are battling anxiety without even knowing it. Often people are skilled at hiding it for a multitude of reasons. They may feel like they have to hold it together for the people around them. Or, maybe worse, they feel like the have to hold it together because they are afraid that others will think less of them. This may be the worst thing that we could do to the people.

Lance Hahn wrote this book to help correct that last issue. As a pastor, he understands the response of the church over throughout history. Rather than seeking to lend a hand and help the sufferers of this disease, the church has simply relegated them to individuals who need to pray for relief more or do something that will take away the feelings. Thankfully, there has been a better response throughout the most recent years. Hahn’s book is another step in the right direction.

Hahn’s book is full of personal stories and steps to help deal with the anxiety  that plagues people. As I said before, I do not suffer from this, but I read this book in order to help those that I come in contact with you are paralyzed by this illness. If you or someone you know has trouble with anxiety, Hahn’s book will be an excellent asset to helping manage the symptoms and alleviating the pain.

My Type Of Marriage Book

The Dudes Guide To Marriage is my sort of marriage book. I am not an expert on marriage. In fact, I don’t think such a thing exists, but I am finally passed the newly wed stage. People are no longer asking how married life is treating me and I consider that a good indication that I must be doing something right.

This is not my first book by Darrin and I am glad that he asked his wife to have a part in this book. While it is maybe uncommon, it’s a good move. We all need to hear the other perspective on the story.

The book has ten principles that the Patrick’s believe will help every man to have a happier marriage. While the chapters are short and simple, do not rush through them. Instead allow ample time to reflect on the thoughts contained there. I am sure that the chapters were short to keep the attention of the male reader.

If you know a husband who needs some work, get them this book. This will probably become a required reading in future pre-marital counseling for the future grooms. It is simply that good.

While I would argue that this book and any book will not guarantee the success of any marriage, this one will definitely help keep that marriage moving strongly.

Website Publisher

If you know anything at all about me, you know I have a decent career as an accountant going on. The pastor thing is new to me and because the church is not in a place to pay a lot in salary, I work a full-time job. I believe that this is good for a few reasons, but that can wait until a later post. What I will tell you is that yesterday I was able to get a website up and running. That was an adventure that I will never forget and another thing I can add to my resume. Continue reading “Website Publisher”
